A Christmas Tree in a German home

Christmas trees have been around for a long time. The tradition of decorating a fir tree, or Tannenbaum in German, at Christmas started in Livonia and Germany about the 16th century. A Bremen guild chronicled in 1570 how a small tree was decorated with "apples, nuts, dates, pretzels and paper flowers" and erected in the guild-house, for the benefit of the guild members' children, who collected the decorations on Christmas Day.

The appearance of the Christmas Tree evolved over the centuries. Today the Christmas tree is traditionally brought into the home and (now) decorated with Christmas lights (originally candles were used), ornaments, garlands, tinsel and candy canes during the time around Christmas.
